npower energy challenge
The energy crisis is rarely out of the news. But what is the solution? How can we balance the UK's energy needs with responsible climate management? Well, that's where you come in. RWE npower hold an annual inter-university competition to find the finest minds in engineering, science and business in their penultimate or final year of undergadaute study at a UK or German university.
In teams of 4, with the help of a supporting lecturer, students are invited to develop a solution that will ensure that the above considerations are met.
How the competition works:
• Form a team.
• Pre-register your team by sending the team name, university, team captain's name (& contact details) and names of the team members to energychallenge@groupgti.com.
• Submit a 500 word summary of your ideas.
• A shortlist of approximately 24 teams will be invited to regional heats to make a 6 minute presentation based on the ideas expressed in the application.
• Up to 8 teams will be invited to the final.
• At the final, each of the teams will extend their presentation to 8 minutes.
Each member of the team may be from different departments or year groups, however each team must have at least one team member that is studying an engineering, science or business related degree. The lecturer supporting the team must be from the same department of at least one team member. The lecturer's role will simply be to provide support and guidance - it will be up to the team to provide all the thinking and deliver the presentation.
The Question:
'How should a power generation & supply company respond to climate change?'
When looking for a resolution teams must consider the following:
• affordability
• public perception of the solution
• areas of security of supply
• sustainability
• customer loyalty & retention
Deadlines
Pre-registration by teams is advised and the deadlines are:
German teams - 5.00pm Friday 13 November 2009

The challenge is an invaluable networking opportunity for participants to meet with RWE npower staff from across the UK & Germany. It also adds a practical dimension to participants’ studies and the all-important commercial awareness so many employers ask for. This is a dynamic time to be involved in the energy industry and calls for the finest minds in engineering, science and business.
